Pierce Brown

Pierce Brown is an American author born in 1988 in Visalia, California. He studied literature and history at the College of William and Mary, where he began developing the ideas that would eventually become his debut novel. Brown spent several years working various jobs — including as a waiter — while writing and refining his manuscript, drawing on his love of classic science fiction, mythology, and political philosophy to create a richly layered vision of a dystopian future.

His debut novel, Red Rising (2014), launched one of the most acclaimed science fiction series of the decade. Set in a future where humanity has colonized the solar system under a rigid color-based caste system, the novel follows Darrow, a lowly Red miner who infiltrates the ruling Gold class to incite revolution from within. The book was praised for its fusion of classic science fiction with the momentum of a literary thriller and the moral complexity of epic mythology — reviewers frequently cited Homer, Tolkien, and Orwell as reference points. Red Rising debuted on the New York Times bestseller list and quickly earned a passionate global readership.

The subsequent novels in the series — Golden Son (2015), Morning Star (2016), Iron Gold (2018), Dark Age (2019), and Light Bringer (2023) — have each debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list, a remarkable achievement that speaks to the series’ grip on its readership. Brown is known for his willingness to put his characters through punishing trials and to follow the logic of his world to its darkest conclusions, giving the series an emotional weight that distinguishes it from much of its genre competition.

Brown’s writing is characterized by its propulsive energy, its operatic emotional scale, and its sophisticated engagement with themes of class, power, sacrifice, and the corrupting nature of revolution. He has spoken extensively about the influence of Roman history on his world-building and the importance of creating a future society with genuine internal logic and moral complexity. Now one of the bestselling science fiction authors in the world, Pierce Brown continues to expand his universe with new novels and a forthcoming television adaptation.
