WritersReview is one of the highest-paying venues for independent literary criticism. We pay professional reviewers $125–$250 per review, we never charge authors or publishers for coverage, and we publish every review as written, positive or not. Our costs are recovered through affiliate links and newsletters, a structure we maintain to protect editorial independence.
What We Expect
Our standard is high by design. Every review must be a minimum of 1,500 words of original critical analysis, not plot summary, not press release paraphrase. We also ask reviewers to compile bibliographic data (ISBN, publisher, publication year, page count) to support our structured schema markup, which helps authors and books appear in Google Knowledge panels and AI search results.
Most books we review receive 3 or 4 stars. Very few earn a 5. Our average rating sits around 3.9 out of 5. A 5-star rating from WritersReview means something.
The WritersReview Meridian Award
Books that receive a 5-star rating are eligible for nomination for the WritersReview Meridian Award, our annual prize recognizing the year’s most significant book. Awarded once a year, to a single title, by editorial judgment.
Who We’re Looking For
We prioritize reviewers who have published at least one book of their own, have editing or acquisitions experience at a publishing house or literary institution, and can demonstrate genuine expertise in a specific genre. We assign reviewers to books in their field, generalists rarely produce the depth we require.
Conflict of Interest
Disclose all relationships with authors, publishers, and books before accepting an assignment. We do not publish reviews by writers with a personal or professional connection to the work under review. A conflict of interest is not disqualifying, but failing to disclose one is.
