Sabaa Tahir

Sabaa Tahir was born in London, England, and grew up in the Mojave Desert of California, where her parents ran a motel. Her background as a Pakistani American woman raised in a small desert town, combined with her deep love of fantasy literature and history, shaped the distinctive voice and perspective she would bring to her epic fantasy fiction. Tahir worked for years as a newspaper editor at the Washington Post while writing her debut novel, revising it through more than a dozen drafts before it found a publisher. Her perseverance was rewarded spectacularly when An Ember in the Ashes was acquired for a significant advance and published to widespread acclaim.

An Ember in the Ashes (2015) is set in a brutal empire inspired by ancient Rome and follows two protagonists: Laia, a Scholar girl who becomes a spy to save her brother, and Elias, a soldier who wants to escape the military machine that has enslaved him. The novel became an instant New York Times bestseller and was praised for its rich world-building, its morally complex characters, and its unflinching examination of power, oppression, and resistance. The series expanded over four books, with each installment deepening the political and emotional complexity of the world and its characters and building to a sweeping, emotionally devastating conclusion.

Tahir’s writing draws on a wide range of historical and cultural influences, weaving elements of North African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian history and mythology into a fantasy world that feels both bracingly original and deeply rooted in real human experience. She writes about violence, trauma, love, and sacrifice with extraordinary intensity, and her characters — particularly her female characters — are defined by their agency, their contradictions, and their refusal to be reduced to simple categories. Her prose is cinematic and visceral, and her plotting is relentless, making her novels difficult to put down despite their considerable length and emotional weight.

Sabaa Tahir has been widely recognized as one of the most important voices in contemporary young adult fantasy fiction. Her work has won numerous state awards, appeared on bestseller lists internationally, and earned devoted fans across age groups. She is a vocal advocate for diversity in publishing and has spoken extensively about the importance of stories that center characters of color in epic fantasy settings. Tahir continues to write from her home in California, and readers eagerly anticipate each new addition to her growing body of work.
