Juliet Marillier

Juliet Marillier was born in 1948 in Dunedin, New Zealand, and grew up with a deep love of history, mythology, and folk tales that would become the bedrock of her extraordinary career as a fantasy novelist. She studied at Otago University in New Zealand, where she earned degrees in music and languages, and worked for many years in music and the arts before turning to writing fiction. Marillier published her first novel in her late forties — a late start by most accounts — but her debut was received with such acclaim that it immediately established her as a major new voice in historical fantasy fiction.

Marillier’s debut, Daughter of the Forest (1999), the first book in the Sevenwaters trilogy, retells the Celtic fairy tale of the six swan brothers through the perspective of Sorcha, the youngest child of a powerful Irish lord, who must complete an impossible task to save her brothers from a sorceress’s curse. Set in early medieval Ireland with meticulous historical detail, the novel is distinguished by its lyrical prose, its rich evocation of Celtic mythology and landscape, and the extraordinary depth and complexity of its heroine. The book was shortlisted for the Aurealis Award and launched a series that has continued across multiple trilogies and companion novels, building one of the most fully realized Celtic fantasy worlds in contemporary literature.

Marillier’s subsequent work includes the Bridei Chronicles, set in Pictish Scotland, and the standalone novels Heart’s Blood and Flame of Sevenwaters, as well as her young adult Shadowfell trilogy set in a fictional world inspired by Scottish history and folklore. Her work is consistently distinguished by its exceptional historical and mythological research, its beautifully crafted prose, and above all its complex, morally serious female protagonists who face genuine dangers and make genuine choices with real consequences. Marillier is one of the few fantasy authors whose work is equally beloved by devoted adult fantasy readers and by younger readers encountering the genre for the first time.

Marillier has won numerous awards including multiple Aurealis Awards for Best Fantasy Novel and a Sir Julius Vogel Award, and is widely regarded as one of the finest writers of Celtic-inspired fantasy in the world. She lives in Perth, Western Australia, and remains actively engaged with her readers through events and online communities dedicated to her work. Her writing embodies a belief in the transformative power of story, of love, and of the old tales that connect us to our deepest cultural roots.
