Jono Neiger
Jono Neiger is an American permaculture designer, educator, and author whose work focuses on sustainable land use, ecological design, and the practical application of permaculture principles to farms, gardens, and communities. Based in New England, Neiger has worked as a landscape designer and educator, helping individuals and organizations develop productive, resilient land-use systems rooted in the observation of natural patterns and processes.
His book The Permaculture Promise: What Permaculture Is and How It Can Help Us Reverse Climate Change, Build a More Resilient Future on Earth, and Revitalize Our Communities offers an accessible introduction to permaculture philosophy and practice. The book is intended for readers who may be new to the subject, explaining how the design framework — originally developed by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in Australia — can be applied to a wide range of scales and contexts, from backyard gardens to regional food systems. Neiger presents permaculture not merely as a set of gardening techniques but as a comprehensive ethical design system capable of addressing some of the most pressing environmental and social challenges of the twenty-first century.
As an educator, Neiger has taught permaculture design courses and workshops, training designers and practitioners across the northeastern United States. His approach emphasizes the integration of ecological knowledge with community building, recognizing that sustainable land use requires social as well as technical solutions. He has been affiliated with the Regenerative Design Institute and has contributed to a growing network of permaculture educators and practitioners in the region.
Neiger’s work reflects a belief that sustainable agriculture and ecological design are not niche pursuits but essential tools for building food security, community resilience, and a healthy relationship between human settlements and the natural systems that support them.
