J.D. Vance
J.D. Vance is an author, venture capitalist, and politician whose 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis became one of the most discussed books of its era, offering an insider’s account of working-class white Appalachian culture amid economic decline. Born James Donald Bowman on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio, to a family with roots in the hills of eastern Kentucky, Vance endured a turbulent childhood defined by a mother’s addiction and the stabilizing presence of his grandparents, “Mamaw” and “Papaw,” who became the emotional center of his story.
Against significant odds, Vance enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after high school, served in Iraq, and then attended Ohio State University before earning his J.D. from Yale Law School in 2013, where he came under the mentorship of legal scholar Amy Chua. His law school experience and the cultural chasm he felt there formed a key part of Hillbilly Elegy‘s argument about class and mobility in America. After Yale he worked in Silicon Valley as a principal at a venture capital firm and later co-founded Narya Capital, a Cincinnati-based investment firm focused on the Midwest.
Hillbilly Elegy spent over a year on the New York Times bestseller list and was adapted into a film by Ron Howard in 2020. The book drew both praise for its empathetic portrayal of a largely ignored demographic and criticism for what some readers saw as an overly individualistic explanation for structural poverty. It was widely read as a lens through which to understand the 2016 presidential election and the political realignment underway in working-class communities.
Vance entered politics as a Republican and was elected to the United States Senate from Ohio in 2022. He was selected as the Republican vice-presidential nominee in 2024 and elected Vice President of the United States, taking office in January 2025. His trajectory from Appalachian poverty to the nation’s second-highest office mirrors the unlikely arc he described in his memoir.
