Brian Greene
Brian Greene is an American theoretical physicist, mathematician, and one of the world’s most gifted communicators of advanced science. Born on February 9, 1963, in New York City, Greene showed an early aptitude for mathematics, completing calculus at the age of twelve. He studied physics at Harvard University and earned his doctorate from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He has spent much of his academic career at Columbia University, where he is a professor of physics and mathematics, and he co-founded the World Science Festival, an annual public celebration of science held in New York City.
Greene is best known for his work on string theory, a theoretical framework that attempts to unify all the fundamental forces and particles of nature by describing them as different vibrational modes of tiny, one-dimensional strings of energy. His first popular science book, The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory (1999), was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and became an international bestseller. The book translated the abstract mathematics of string theory into vivid analogies and clear prose, making this frontier of physics accessible to a broad audience. It was subsequently adapted into a NOVA television documentary.
His follow-up, The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality (2004), explored the nature of space, time, quantum mechanics, and the expanding universe, again achieving both critical acclaim and popular success. The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos (2011) examined the various theoretical frameworks that predict the existence of multiple universes, navigating the philosophical as well as scientific implications of these ideas. His most recent major work, Until the End of Time: Mind, Matter, and Our Search for Meaning in an Evolving Universe (2020), takes on the grandest questions of all — the origins and destiny of the universe, the emergence of life and consciousness, and what it means for humans to find purpose in a cosmos indifferent to our existence.
Greene’s ability to combine rigorous physics with philosophical depth and narrative skill has made him one of the most trusted popular expositors of modern science. Through his books, television appearances, and public lectures, he has brought the excitement of theoretical physics to audiences far beyond the academy.
