Johan Rockstrom

Johan Rockstrom is a world-leading Earth system scientist and one of the principal architects of the planetary boundaries framework, which identifies nine biophysical systems whose stability is essential to maintaining the conditions in which human civilization has flourished. He is Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and a Professor at the University of Potsdam. Rockstrom was previously Executive Director of the Stockholm Resilience Centre and a Professor at Stockholm University, where he led the team that published the landmark planetary boundaries paper in Nature in 2009. He is a co-author of Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity, published by New Society Publishers in 2022 and winner of the Meridian Award for Philosophy. He is also the author of Big World, Small Planet: Abundance Within Planetary Boundaries (2015, with Mattias Klum), and has given one of the most-watched TED talks on the environment. Rockstrom is a member of numerous international scientific advisory bodies and is widely recognized as one of the most influential voices in global sustainability science.
