Simon Singh
Simon Singh is a British science writer and broadcaster whose books have introduced millions of readers to some of the most captivating stories in mathematics, physics, and the history of ideas. Born on September 19, 1964, in Wellington, Somerset, England, Singh studied physics at Imperial College London and earned his doctorate in particle physics from Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He worked as a producer and director for the BBC before turning to writing full time.
His first book, Fermat’s Enigma: The Epic Quest to Solve the World’s Greatest Mathematical Problem (1997), told the story of Andrew Wiles’s proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem and became an international bestseller. Singh’s gift for narrative made the abstruse world of number theory gripping and emotionally resonant for a general audience. He followed this with The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography (1999), a sweeping history of cryptography that traced the arms race between codemakers and codebreakers across millennia. Both books demonstrated Singh’s rare ability to find human drama within complex technical subjects.
His subsequent works have ranged widely. Big Bang: The Origin of the Universe (2004) chronicled the development of cosmological theory from ancient Greek speculation to the evidence for the Big Bang. Trick or Treatment: The Undeniable Facts About Alternative Medicine (2008), co-authored with physician Edzard Ernst, applied scientific scrutiny to a range of alternative therapies. Singh also co-created the television series The Science of Secrecy for Channel 4, and his efforts to advance science literacy have extended to legal battles — he successfully defended a libel action brought against him by the British Chiropractic Association, a case that became a landmark for free speech in scientific debate.
Singh has received numerous awards for his contributions to science communication, including a Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and continues to advocate for evidence-based thinking, mathematical education, and the public understanding of science.
