Ben Miller

Ben Miller is a British actor, comedian, director, and science writer whose career has taken him from the comedy stages of Britain to the pages of popular science. Born in 1966 in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, he studied natural sciences at Pembroke College, Cambridge, before leaving academia to pursue a career in performance. He is best known to television audiences as one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller, alongside Alexander Armstrong, and for his role as Richard Poole in the BBC series Death in Paradise.

Miller’s science writing reflects his genuine passion for physics and cosmology, subjects he studied before changing course. His first popular science book, It’s Not Rocket Science (2012), offers an accessible and often humorous introduction to science, tackling topics including particle physics, evolution, space exploration, and climate science. The book became a bestseller and showcased Miller’s ability to blend comedy with clear scientific explanation, making complex ideas available to readers with no prior science background.

His follow-up, The Aliens Are Coming! The Exciting and Terrifying Science of Astrobiology (2016), explores the science behind the search for extraterrestrial life, examining the latest research in exoplanet discovery, extremophile biology, and SETI. Miller brings both enthusiasm and rigour to the subject, grounding speculation in current scientific understanding while keeping the narrative lively and entertaining. He has also written fiction, including the novel Now We Are Forgiven (2021), demonstrating the breadth of his literary ambitions.
