Q.T. Luong

Q.T. Luong is a Vietnamese-American nature photographer widely regarded as one of the most accomplished landscape photographers working in the tradition of documenting America’s national parks. Born in Vietnam and educated in France, where he earned a doctorate in computer vision from Paris-Sud University, Luong immigrated to the United States and combined his analytical training with an extraordinary eye for the natural world. He is the only person known to have photographed every unit of the U.S. National Park System using large-format film cameras, a feat that required decades of fieldwork and tens of thousands of exposures.

Luong’s magnum opus, Treasured Lands: A Photographic Odyssey Through America’s National Parks, published in 2019, is a monumental large-format volume showcasing images from all 59 major national parks. The book received widespread critical acclaim and became one of the most celebrated photography books of recent years, earning recognition from institutions and reviewers who praised both its visual grandeur and its implicit argument for the protection of wild places. The project took more than two decades to complete and stands as a unique record of America’s most cherished landscapes.

A technically meticulous craftsman, Luong works predominantly with large-format film cameras, seeking out the extraordinary light, scale, and detail that such equipment makes possible. His images are known for their luminosity, compositional precision, and ability to convey the sheer scale of wilderness. He has also contributed to the field of digital photography and has maintained a long-running website, terragalleria.com, which has served as an influential resource for landscape photographers around the world.

In addition to his photographic work, Luong has written and lectured extensively on technique, conservation, and the ethics of wilderness photography. His career stands as a testament to the power of patient observation and artistic dedication in service of environmental awareness and the preservation of natural heritage.
