Marie Kondo

Marie Kondo is a Japanese organizing consultant, author, and television personality who has transformed the way millions of people around the world relate to their possessions and their living spaces. Her KonMari Method — a tidying philosophy that asks of every object not “do I need this?” but “does this spark joy?” — has sparked a global cultural movement and fundamentally reshaped conversations about consumption, simplicity, and the relationship between our physical environments and our inner lives.

Kondo grew up in Tokyo with a passion for order and organization that manifested early in childhood — she has described spending recesses tidying her classroom while other students played outside. This instinct deepened into a methodology that she developed over years of professional organizing work, rooted in her reading of Shinto philosophy, which regards objects as possessing energy and deserving of respect. Rather than simply clearing clutter, the KonMari Method invites a more intentional engagement with one’s possessions — handling each item, expressing gratitude for its service, and deciding mindfully whether it earns a place in one’s life going forward.

Her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing was first published in Japan in 2011 and became an instant bestseller before its English translation took the world by storm in 2014. It has sold over sixteen million copies worldwide and been translated into more than forty languages. The book’s category-by-category approach — tackling clothes, books, papers, miscellaneous items, and sentimental objects in a specific order — gave readers a clear, practical framework while its philosophical underpinning gave the act of tidying an unexpected emotional and spiritual depth.

Kondo followed her debut with Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up (2016) and later co-authored Joy at Work: Organizing Your Professional Life (2020) with Scott Sonenshein, extending the KonMari principles to professional environments. Her Netflix series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo (2019) and Sparking Joy (2021), brought her approach to a global television audience and generated a new wave of KonMari enthusiasm worldwide.

Named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2015, Kondo has become a genuine cultural phenomenon — her name has entered the language as both a noun and a verb, “to kondo” something having become shorthand for the act of mindful decluttering. Beyond tidying, her work has prompted broader cultural conversations about consumer culture, the purpose of possessions, and how the spaces we inhabit reflect and shape who we are and who we aspire to become.
