Lynn Downey
Lynn Downey is an American historian and author whose book Levi Strauss: A Pioneer of the American West, published in 2016 by University of California Press, is the authoritative biography of the founder of the world’s most famous blue jeans company. Downey served as the official historian of Levi Strauss and Company for more than twenty years, a position that gave her unprecedented access to the company’s archives and allowed her to become the leading expert on the history of American denim and the life of its most iconic figure.
Her previous publications include A Short History of Denim and various company histories and pamphlets produced for the Levi Strauss archives. Her scholarly and popular writing has appeared in publications and exhibitions devoted to American business history, Western history, and the material culture of clothing.
The biography traces Strauss’s journey from Bavaria to the California Gold Rush, his establishment as a dry goods merchant in San Francisco, and his partnership with Nevada tailor Jacob Davis in developing and patenting riveted work pants — the garment that would become the blue jean and eventually a global cultural icon. Downey uses Strauss’s story to illuminate the wider history of Jewish immigration, Western settlement, American manufacturing, and the garment trade in the nineteenth century.
Downey has been a speaker at museums, historical societies, and universities and is a recognized authority on the cultural history of American clothing and commerce. Her biography is considered both a contribution to California history and a model of narrative business biography that situates a company’s origins within their full social and historical context.
